CIK KARTING CHAMPIONSHIPS & MOTORSPORT NEWS KARTSTARS
Australia — Round 2 of the 2005 Pettaras Press CIK / Motorsport News Kartstars series saw the running of Pro Clubman as the support class on 28th & 29th May 2005 at Eastern Creek International Karting Raceway.
The feature race for Saturday afternoon was the Pro Clubman support class sponsored by Defence Industries Pty Ltd.
25 of the best drivers from NSW and other parts of Australia and New Zealand took part in this action packed CIK-style format of racing.
Some of the drivers entered were also competing in CIK or KartStars classes and were not required to qualify or compete in the heats, but would have to start from the rear of the grid for either of the 2 finals.
In the morning different drivers took part in the practice sessions and the qualifying. Kyle Clews in his Phoenix kart topped the time sheets to take pole from Ryan Bell, Thomas Phillips and Matthew Hayes.
Heat 1 saw 17 of the 25 drivers take to the track, in the end Kyle Clews took the win from Matthew Skelton and Hayes.
In an eventful heat 2 experienced CRG driver Nick Agland finished first just ahead of Thomas Phillips and Matthew Hayes again in third. Clews and Ryan Gallagher didn’t make it to the finish and would have to start back in the order in the first final.
Final 1got underway with everyone lining the fences to watch the action, it was another win for Nick Agland with Matthew Hayes and Thomas Phillips swapping places from the previous race for the 2nd and 3rd places.
The race of the day was Final 2 with all the CIK and KartStars drivers taking part after finishing their other racing duties for the day and ready to have some fun in the Pro Clubman Final. Two drivers starting from way back in the grid was Kristian Lindbom after a very successful day in KartStars and Kyle Clews who only just made it to the grid. On the first corner of the start Nick Aglands hope of repeating his performance of the first final were dashed after spearing off the track in the first corner, another 2 more casualties were Adam Law and Joel Rhodes parking their karts in the second corner. While all this was going on Lindbom and Clews had already moved into the middle of the pack. Ryan Gallagher broke away to a lead early on, meanwhile the action was with Clews and Lindbom who were both showing a devastating pace and were picking off drivers one by one. After 21 laps hard laps around the demanding Eastern Creek Raceway it was a very happy Ryan Gallagher taking the win from Kyle Clews who gotten past Kristian Lindbom on the final lap, fourth was Scott Auld from a very consistent Matthew Hayes, Thomas Phillips, Matthew Skelton, Kiwi driver Bradley Tyrell, Daniel Erickson and Ryan Monoghan rounding out the top ten.
Trophies for Pro Clubman were presented by Mark Winterbottom, Jason Richards and Jamie Whincup who had all come over to the kart track from their days racing in the V8’s at the ‘big track’ next door.
