HOW EUROPEANS ADDRESS SOME OF THE CONCERNS OF AMERICAN OPERATORS A Report From Europe By Bob Cycon
|
|||||||||||||
| As
more and more entrepreneurs research the opening of indoor race tracks,
questions arise that perplex the American thought processes. Among those
questions are the sanitation of helmets, serving of alcohol and children
driving the race karts?
1. Youngsters Driving – In Europe, all drivers must posses a valid automobile drivers license to race in an indoor center. Pure and simple, no ifs, ands or buts! However, some indoor centers do offer Saturday morning Junior Karting classes for children, whereby kids can be taught how to safely and properly drive a race kart. 2. Sanitation of Helmets – Dirty, sweaty helmets are a turn-off to drivers, not to mention the potential for head lice, infections, etc. In Europe, most centers require the purchase of a nylon/cotton sock or mask to be worn on the head under the helmet. The socks cost $2-3 and are washable and re-usable. 3. Serving of alcohol – The staff at the indoor karting centers carefully monitor the consumption of alcohol in the on-site restaurant and the laws are similar to those of driving an automobile. If a patron is caught on the track under the influence of alcohol, the police will be called and an arrest will be made. 4. Driver Education – The Europeans have thorough driver training sessions before each group goes out on the track. Drivers must understand general and track safety rules, and color signs explaining safety flags are carefully reviewed. If a driver commits a single safety violation, he or she is black flagged and is through for the day. Again the rules are adhered to – no arguments! 5. Community Objections – Europeans work closely with their communities becoming an important part of the economic structure. Additionally, they give back to their communities in the form of special promotions for residents, hosting of charity events, charitable donations, etc. 6. Insurance – Many Americans
are concerned that they will not be able to obtain insurance because indoor
karting centers are a different breed of racing, without defined insurance
requirements. Relax, the Europeans say! Early on they expressed the same
concerns, but economics took over. Where there is a demand, insurance agents
will find a way to write policies.
