2000 CIK/FIA KARTING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE HELD IN PORTUGAL

The World Championship of Karting top categories, Formula Super A and Formula A, will be held September 8-10 in Braga, Portugal. The Portuguese circuit has already hosted several international karting championships (European Juniors in 1994, Junior 5 in 1995 and European Formula C and ICCC Championship in 1997 and 1998, and the European Junior Championship in 1998), but this is the first time that the World Championship will be held at this venue.

A total of 160 drivers are entered, including the three 1999 World Champions: Dinilo Rossi (Italy), Frank Perera (France), and Frabcesco Laudato (Italy), as well as six other former world karting champions. The list of entries also includes both 2000 European Champions, Mario Siegers (The Netherlands) and Stefano Fabi (son of Teo) from Italy, Nelson Piquet Jr. (Brazil)  and Nico Rosberg (son of Keke) from Finland.

This will be the final time the World Formula Super A and Formula A Championship will be held as a single event. Next year, CIK/FIA has decided to run only one category, the Formula Super A. For more information telephone: +41-22-306-1080.

Editorial Note: According to the provisional list of entries, there are no drivers from the USA entered in the event.

ILLINOIS ATTORNEY GENERAL SUES TRACK OWNER

The Office of the Illinois States Attorney, Jim Ryan, acting upon a request by the Illinois Department of Labor, has sued Arkansas-based Opossum Grape Inc., and its owner Chris Wold.  The suit asks for a permanent injunction that would keep closed a number of kart tracks in the Chicagoland area. This would include a track in Tinley Park, Illinois and one in Palatine, Illinois where a young child was fatally injured this summer while riding in her mothers lap. The attendant at that track told the mother it was okay to ride despite a height restriction. The same company owns other tracks in Wheeling, Melrose Park and Waukegan, Illinois. Neither Chris Wold nor Opossum Grape, Inc. could be reached for comment. (Note: See related story from last week in Archives.).
