MANCO ISSUES FUN KART RECALL NOTICE

On Monday, August 14, 2000, Manco Products, Inc., Fort Wayne, Indiana has issued a “Safety Recall Notice” which reads as follows: For Manco, Phoenix, Fox, Coyote and Rattler brand fun karts - Long hair or loose clothing can contact moving parts behind the seat causing death, scalping or serious injury. Manco (Products) received one report of (a) death and two reports of scalping injuries when teenage girls’ long hair became entangled in moving parts behind the seat.

All Manco models equipped with live axles produced after January, 1997 and Manco models with crossover jackshafts produced from January, 1983 through December, 1996 are included in this recall.  STOP USING THE KARTS IMMEDIATELY AND CALL: 1-800-293-0795

Manco Products will provide a free repair kit with instructions for easy installation. Consumers can also contact any Manco dealer to get free installation of the repair kit. A PIONEER PASSES

Ormel Duke, Torrance, California, one of the “pioneers” of karting and a member of Earl Larson’s (GEM Products) “Geritol” Gang (a group of kart racers and manufacturers from the original days of the sport who meet annually) has passed away recently after a lengthy illness. Mr. Duke worked at McCulloch Corporation in the kart division and was past president of the International Kart Federation (IKF). (See a related editorial in Eye On The Industry)
 

ILLINOIS CITY GEARING UP FOR GRAND PRIX

Rock Island, Illinois, on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River, is preparing for its annual Labor Day gala, the Rock Island Grand Prix. The event, the largest street race in North America, will host the “King of the Streets” race, the second stop in Superkarts USA’s triple crown on September 2-3. The event will also boast the largest purse in pro karting, $25,000, provided by the Casino Rock Island. Other classes include both 2-cycle and 4-cycle as well as ones for junior drivers. The track is huge and fast and will allow for lots of passing which will make it an exciting race for both spectators and drivers alike. In years past, the event has drawn kart racers from over 20 states, Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and Italy. 

Tom Argy of TCM Racing, Niagara Falls, NY will return as race director. Electronic timing and scoring will again be provided by SKUSA with starting positions assigned through qualifying. EAST AND WEST COAST VINTAGE KARTS TAKE TO THE TRACK!

Vintage Kart Eastern Divisional Championships will be held at Sugar Hill Speedway, Weare, New Hampshire on August 27. This event is open to all vintage (historic) karts 1975 and older. Trophies will be awarded along with a guaranteed starting spot at the Vintage Kart Nationals in 2001. On the West Coast, another vintage kart race will be held on Sunday, September 24 in Camby (Portland-area), Oregon at Pat’s Acres. THE AUTO CHANNEL TO BROADCAST KART EXPO LIVE!

Once again, www.theautochannel.com will provide live Internet TV coverage of the 2001 Kart Expo. The show will be held February 17-18, 2001 at the Pheasant Run Resort and Convention Center in St. Charles. Illinois (Suburban Chicago). 

Kart Expo, the premiere exposition for kart racing in North American, will feature the latest in race karts, equipment, accessories and services. The live “TV on the ‘net” broadcasts will include new product introductions, sponsor and exhibitor interviews, news of the exposition and the karting industry, celebrity and consumer interviews and audience participation segments.

Coverage will originate from the show floor during both days of the event and will be broadcast on the worldwide web at: www.theautochannel.com. The broadcasts will occur in 30 minute segments approximately every 90 minutes. Viewing hours are from 9 AM -6 PM on Saturday, February 17, 2001 and 10 AM - 4 PM on Sunday, February 18. All live broadcasts will be archived for continuous on-demand access. Each month, www.theautochannel.com generates about 3,000,000 visits to the web site.

According to Expo director Darrell Sitarz, “This live coverage affords a wonderful opportunity to showcase the most popular form of motorsports to a worldwide audience.
