To commemorate this event, national treasurer George Copeland hopes to put together a history of the club and the changes which have taken place in 50 years of marshalling. George intends it to be a fairly light-hearted history of marshalling, but wishes it to be historically accurate. He said: "I need lots more information about the early days, if the history is to make any sense. I would like to hear especially from anyone who remembers the Marshals' Club being formed, the changes this brought about and the views anyone in motorsport as to what purpose the club might fulfill in the future. "What was marshalling like before the Marshals' Club came along? How quickly did the club make an impression on the marshalling scene? Some people in authority thought that it would become a marshals' union and that there would be strikes and all that went with the worst of unionism at that time. Thankfully, this never was the case. By the time I became involved, many who harbored these suspicions had become the club's greatest supporters." George would like to contact people with personal memories of the very early days of the BMMC, or who knows how to contact anyone who might. He would also like to hear anecdotes about marshalling occurrences, and stories about interesting characters involved with the BMMC or marshalling in general. Once enough contributions have been received, George plans to organize them. As he said, "I am sure I can rely upon some of our journalist friends to help, if this proves to be beyond my limited literary talents." Should it become worth publishing, all proceeds will go to BMMC club funds, for allocation to suitable marshalling causes. All contributions should be sent in writing to: George W Copeland, Email: macgwc@aol.com Post: Long Barn House, Ravenstone, Nr Olney, Bucks MK46 5AS, Great Britain. This will be experience of a life time a great opportunity for an individual, whether you represent yourself or a company, to be part of an event that sets new standards for karting performance and help to set a Guinness World Record.
NORTHERN CALIFORNIA MARIN KARTING ROTAX MAX CHALLENGE SERIES BEGINS IT’S 2005 SEASON AT INFINEON RACEWAY. Well after a month rain delay, the Northern California Marin Karting Rotax Max Challenge series finally got underway with it’s 2005 series on April 2, at Infineon Raceway kart track.
The series has seen a few new changes this year, with some being quite challenging to the racers. The first being a new brand of required tire, Mojo tires from Germany. Most of the competitors had not raced on these tires until this race day. All were wondering how they would compare to the Bridgestone’s that the series ran last year. The second issue of interest was that the International class had to add 10 pounds to their karts bringing them up to 365 pounds. Many new drivers have joined the series, with some saying the reason they joined Rotax rather than another series was that it offered a level playing field because of the sealed engine program. A total of 16 drivers signed up to race in two classes, Masters and International with hopes to have a good enough season to make it to the Rotax Max Challenge Nationals in September which will be held in Indiana this year. The schedule was set. The weather was good. Marin Karting was there bright and early to help all the racers get their last minute items. Let the fun begin. First practice was a warm up session meaning that karts go at ¾ speed for 5 minutes. This is a good time to run the track to see evaluate the new tic tac toe turn that Infineon change during the winter. Next came a full speed practice to bring the karts to speed and get any set-up issues brought to life. Now it’s time to go to tech and make sure that the kart meets all the Rotax and Infineon race rules for safety.
Qualifying was next with the drivers broken up into two sessions. Track officials break the field up when there are more than 15 karts in the field. After 5 minutes of qualifying the times were very close but Phillip Johnson came out on top. With rookie Troy Castaneda coming in a close second. The second row was veteran January Grove and rookie Mike Hill in the International class with rookie Jay Brosuis and veteran Gary Scharlach leading the Masters class. This is how they will start the pre-final. The pre-final got started a little slow after two false starts. Some new drivers need a little more seat time in the rolling starts of Rotax races. The race started with a large pile up in turn one. Of course we all know we can win a race in the first turn so, we have to go for it. Not. Bryan Hughes and Matt Wirth did not make it out of the carnage of the opening lap. With Carlos Hidrovo, Dan Dollosso and Emmanuel Cellest feeling the effects of the first lap incident and not being able to continue past lap 3. Up in the front Johnson, Castaneda, Grove and Hill were battling it out. The race came to an end with Johnson winning by a 3.6 second margin.
So the final was set to begin a little later than most had anticipated with many drivers trying to figure out which jet to go with. The wind had picked up and the temperature was dropping. Last minute preparations were done and the racers on the grid. But wait the race director wanted to have a little chat with all the drivers and a drivers meeting was held on the grid. Ric Shaw told the drivers that he did not want a repeat of the pre-final start and would be watching three specific drivers for violations to the rules of the track. With the meeting complete the drivers took their parade warm-up lap and lined up in start order on the second time around. The green flag dropped and we were racing. A clean start and everyone got through the first turn. It’s amazing what a little talking to will do for racers. Johnson led the way with Grove taking second after the first lap and Castanada third. But wait, who is the kart coming up fast and catching the front runners? Mike Hill shook off the start webs and settled in to take Castanada then Grove for second place right behind the bumper of Phillip Johnson. Hill takes Johnson for first, Johnson takes back first from Hill. What a battle. Several laps of good close racing led one of the drivers to take a little risky overtaking in an area that just could not fit two karts at the same time. End result. They took each other out of the race, while also collecting Grove in the process. Grove was able to get restarted and back on the track only after Castanada and Hidrovo had passed her. Three laps were not enough time for Hidrovo and Grove to catch Castanada. Back in the Masters class Gary Scharlach with his newly acquired second chassis, due to an unfortunate incident at the Nationals in Las Vegas last October, won the main with almost a 2.5 second lead over Jay Brosius. Awards were given to the top four finishers in each class. Marin Karting has for the second year sponsored the Rotax Max Challenge series and awarded gift certificates for all the winners to do what they do best beside race, Spend money on kart parts. Design 500, the custom driving suit company has also joined the fast growing Rotax series by providing gift certificates. Each race will have a new award presented; drivers do not know what it will be or how they can win it. It has been rumored that the cleanest kart after the race will win an award, but only time and more races will let us know for sure. All drivers are anxiously waiting for May 7th the date of our next race. The race was originally slated to be held at Dixon, however a opening became available at Infineon.
