TIPS FOR STORING GASOLINE

Safety should be the #1 concern for all owners of fun karts. The following are tips for the safe storage of gasoline.

Use only containers approved for gasoline storage. Look for “Classified by Underwriter’s Laboratories, Inc.” and “Meets ASTM D3435; F852-86 Standards”. The containers are normally colored red and labeled with the word GASOLINE in large letters.

Gasoline storage e containers come in various sizes. For ease of handling, maximum safety and maintenance of gasoline quality, the size of your container should be as small as practical. Generally, it should not hold more gasoline than you will use during a two-month period. Your container should also have tight sealing caps (lids) on all openings such as pour spouts and vents to maintain gasoline quality and also to prevent accidental gasoline spillage during non-use periods.

It is recommended that you replace your existing container if it does not meet these requirements. If you have a metal storage container that is beginning to rust or corrode, replace it as soon as possible. Also, when selecting a gasoline storage container, try to choose one with a filter screen in the pour spout, which will help prevent accidental transfer of rust or dirt particles into the engine’s fuel tank. If the container does not have it own pour spout, a funnel (preferably with a filter screen) should be used during fillings.

MAINTAINING FUEL QUALITY IN STORAGE CONTAINERS
Allowing gasoline to be continually exposed to air can lead to gum formation, octane loss, loss of volatility and moisture pick-up, all of which contribute to hard starting, poor performance and engine damage. Also, a significant loss of volatility from the gasoline can potentially create an explosive vapor mixture inside the container. Therefore, when not in use, the storage container should be sealed by tightly closing all caps on pour spouts and vent holes.

Tightly sealing the storage container should maintain the gasoline’s quality between uses and seasons. For off-season storage, a gasoline stabilizer such as STA-BIL should be used for added protection to maintain the gasoline’s shelf life. Also, gasoline containers and small engine equipment should be stored in a cool, dry place that is well ventilated and out of direct sunlight, as well as out of the reach of small children.
