KARTING MEANS TO ME!
By Scott Pruett When Darrell Sitarz asked me to write this, I was somewhat hesitant. I am a racer not a writer! As I gave it more thought, I became honored and realized that was exactly his point. Karting is where it all began for me back in 1968. AS I reflect over my years of racing, many fond memories come to mind. I remember my pre- racing years (barely) at the tender age of four, driving an old “go-kart” around the house. It was yellow and the chain always fell off. My father raced too, and I remember going with him and his buddies to McClellan Air Force Base. I can thank him for getting me interested in all this. 1968 – Lodi, California — My first race. Rookie class and scared to death! 1971 – Qunicy, Illinois — My first National Championship title. Rookie class and (now) ready to take on the world. 1985 – Barnesville, Georgia — My last karting race. Winning two Senior classes and ready for the next step. Seventeen years in kart racing brought me numerous National Championship titles, professional titles, regional and local championships and being crowned as “King of Karting” in 1980. Karting was not just a career for me, it was a life style. The people, places, friends, and competition were second to none. My induction into the Karting Hall of Fame in 1991 will stand out as one of my greatest achievements. I had no idea my years of karting would someday lead me to Indy Car racing and more importantly, the 1989 Indianapolis 500 Rookie-of-the-Year. I still kart when I can for fun and to keep in shape in my 125 shifter. Maybe we will “run into each other” at the track! Good luck! Scott Pruett
