THE RACERS EDGE
IT’S A DIRTY JOB…
By Darrell Sitarz

It seems that it’s that last thing track and club management worries about and the first thing people (racers, their families, and spectators) notice and remember are… trackside restrooms!

Having visited dozens and dozens of racetracks over the past 30-some years, one thing that is consistent: the rest room facilities at many tracks are atrocious! Yes, there are a few that take into consideration of their patrons, but for the most part, the restrooms at kart track are a mess!

Whether there are 50 or 350 entries at a race track weekly, track management are/or kart clubs NEED to address common sense sanitation. Racers, their families, pit crews, officials, spectators and importantly, sponsors, have a right to expect clean, sanitary toilets and restroom facilities.

I guess the big question is: Why are some track so negligent in this area? A) Do track owner/operators feel that karters don’t need or deserve proper facilities because they won’t keep them clean? or, B) Is it because no one really like the job of cleaning and stocking the restrooms? Neither one is a good excuse!

Clean washroom/restroom facilities are as much a part of running a track as bringing the flags and making sure the microphone works. If you have trouble securing volunteers to ‘work the washrooms’, draw straws each week to determine whose job it is to do the maintenance work. Yes, it’s a dirty job, and someone has to do it!

I’ve been to tracks where the only facilities are primitive, freestanding outhouses with no toilet tissue, running water, soap or wash facilities. These situations totally ignore the basics of sanitation and the potential of communicable diseases. If outhouses or Porta-Potties are the only options, make sure they are maintained and kept well stocked. If running water is not available, a Handi-wipe dispenser, or water dispenser and a roll of paper towels will do the trick. And don’t forget a waste basket, too.

People would not stand for filthy washrooms in their homes, so why should they tolerate them at tracks?
